Twitter replaces share button for Android users with WhatsApp share icon

Micro-blogging platform Twitter on Thursday said it was replacing the share button for Android users with a WhatsApp share icon on an experimental basis to enable them to share tweets easily on the instant-messaging platform.

The service, which will be launched in India first, will be available to users of the Android app of the platform initially and then be rolled out to other operating systems and countries based on the learning from the experiment, the company said.

“Our goal behind testing this feature in India, home to one of the most diverse sets of the audience, is to unlock the learnings and potential and apply them to other Android first markets and the rest of the world,” said Shirish Andhare, director and product head at Twitter India.

The WhatsApp share button is the second product feature that the social media intermediary has launched quickly. On September 1, Twitter said it was testing the ‘Edit’ button internally and would roll out the feature for Twitter Blue users over September.

As part of the plan, the edit button would allow users to edit a published tweet within 30 minutes of being sent out. Twitter had also said that it would, while limiting the number of times a tweet is sent, show the history of changes made in the tweet so that the reader is aware of the conversation.

The time limit of 30 mins and the tweet’s version history was essential to be displayed to “protect the integrity of the conversation and create a publicly accessible record of what was said”, Twitter had said in a statement.
