Dmitry Bivol defied the odds to hand boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez, his second career loss. Here’s how Twitter reacted to the upset result.
Canelo Alvarez is one of the best boxers in the world. So is Dmitry Bivol.
Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) retained his WBA light heavyweight title with an upset victory over Alvarez. It was the result few expected, but it was the right call.
Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) is still the undisputed super middleweight champion, but this marks his only loss since his 2013 defeat at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez is the most marketable fighter in the world, but Bivol’s size, skill, and conditioning proved too much for Alvarez. All three judges returned scores of 115-113 for Bivol.
The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas witnessed the loss live, but the scores weren’t much of a surprise. It was a clear victory for Bivol. FanSided had it 117-111 for Bivol.
Alvarez said after the fight that he wants a rematch with Bivol. There is a rematch clause, so there’s a good chance they will run this back.
