Travis Head won’t apologise for brain explosion that saw him throw his bat across dressing room

Australian Test star Travis Head says he won’t apologise for his bat-throwing tantrum following a poor innings abroad after was broadcast in Amazon’s The Test documentary series. 

The second season, which premiered on Prime Video this week, details the new-look Australian Test side after Tim Paine resigned from the captaincy and shows plenty of fly-on-the-wall vision of the playing squad.

In one scene from Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka in 2022, Head hurls his bat across the dressing room in a fit of rage after being dismissed cheaply. 

Head’s record abroad stands at an average of 21.3 from seven Tests, which he’ll be desperate to improve on next month’s tour of India. 

While the vision captures the South Australian during one of his darkest slumps, he says it also illustrated the harsh reality of professional cricket.

”That’s the thing in the doco, you turn around and you see the camera in the corner and you go, ‘oh s***,’ Head told News Corp. 

‘It came natural. It’s raw. I don’t try and do it too much, but emotions do go and you have moments you look back on and you’d like to take back. 

‘I don’t really apologise for any of that. I am there to play and play well and try and win games of cricket and try and do as best as I can.’

The 29-year-old said he regrets blowing his top at Cameron Green during the West Indies series in December, when a communication mix-up led to a run-out that deprived him of a shot at a double century.

Head isn’t the only Aussie star to get some limelight due to their bad temper. 

David Warner, Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon are all shown in times of frustration, slamming doors, throwing gear and swearing in anger.

Off-spinner Lyon openly criticises Pakistani cricket for the shocking pitches he had to bowl on during last March’s tour. 

‘Officially the worst game I’ve ever been a part of,’ Lyon said. 

Warner is pictured launching a water bottle into a wall and yelling ‘f**k this’, while Smith goes on an expletive-laden tirade after being run out courtesy of a mistake by teammate Usman Khawaja.

Former Australian cricketers Michael Slater and Michael Bevan were renowned for their post-innings blowups, which often involved damaging gear and screaming in the dressing sheds.

Head will be hoping his form from the series against the Windies and South Africa continues in the subcontinent. 

Over the past two seasons on home soil he has averaged 57 with the bat and has served as a handy bowling change when asked by captain Pat Cummins. 

Cricket greats Michael Hussey and Greg Blewett believe Head is a staple for the future of Australian cricket and a must for the upcoming India and Ashes series.
