TMC walked extra mile to forge alliance with Congress for Goa polls: Abhishek Banerjee

Slamming the Congress for its “hypocrisy” in connection with the opposition alliance, Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed on Thursday that Trinamool “has walked an extra mile to forge an alliance with the Congress” ahead of the Goa assembly polls. Attacking senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, Banerjee said that if the Congress failed to defeat BJP in Goa, “Chidambaram should come out in public and take the blame on him.”

“If Congress fails to defeat BJP, then he should be the first one to resign,” Banerjee said. “Trinamool leader Pavan Varma had gone to Chidambaram’s residence to discuss the alliance on December 24.”

The Trinamool leader said that “the Congress is misleading the people at large” by saying that the Trinamool Congress did not make any offer.

“Chidambaram is misleading the people of Goa and Congress in Goa is hand-in glove with BJP. P Chidambaram, for whom I have the highest regard, has been misguiding people to serve the interest of his party. He said Trinamool has never made the offer for alliance to the Congress. However, Pavan Varma put this in the public domain that being the National vice-president of the party, went to Chidambaram’s house on 24th December,” Banerjee said.

“Chidambaram is an eminent lawyer, if he thinks that if we are fudging any information then he can sue us. Let us go the court and find out who is lying. Pavan Varma went to Chidambaram’s house at Lodhi Road and requested him that we should keep our egos aside and make sure that we fight it out for the sake of the Goans. But Chidambaram failed to rise over his own political & petty interests,” Banerjee claimed

Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee gave a clarion call to the like-minded people of Goa and asked all to unite against BJP during her visit to Goa in October, Banerjee iterated. “This is when Mahrashtrawadi Gomantak Party (GMP) came on board. The seat sharing with Trinamool Congress and MGP is 31:9 ratio.”

Trinamool Congress national general secretary said, “We wanted to stitch together an alliance and we walked an extra mile so that alliance was forged. We have come to Goa because we have seen how the mandate of Goa was betrayed in 2017.”

Pavan Verma went to Chidambaram’s residence on December 24 and met him and made sure we fight it out for every Goans. First you have to agree in principle and then we can take it forward. All those logistical things will then work out.

Ruling out Congress’ claims that Trinamool is trying to eat into Congress’ vote share in Goa and Trinamool is dividing anti-BJP votes, Banerjee said, “The narrative Congress is pushing was correct, then we would have gone to Rajasthan and Punjab. We are going to states to defeat BJP in Tripura and Goa, not Punjab and Chhattisgarh.

“Trinamool is the only party which is taking BJP head-on. We have fielded candidates in 11 seats while we announce the rest in some time,” Banerjee added.
