Throwback: When Lata Mangeshkar spoke about Nargis Dutt | Hindi Movie News – Times of India

Nargis Dutt was the pillar behind her husband Sunil Dutt’s success. Together they constituted a force to reckon with in the film industry. Today, on Nargis’ death anniversary, we look back at her life and persona through the past recollections of Lata Mangeshkar.

In an unpublished interview Lata Mangeshkar, who had the privilege to know Nargis closely, had spoken of Nargis’ philanthropic work. “Nargis ji and Dutt saab were involved in many charitable works. They were truly evolved artistes. For them being celebrities was a door into contributing to society. Nargis ji was actively involved with innumerable charitable efforts. But she never wanted the work to be known for publicity.”
Most important of all was Nargis’ endeavour to entertain soldiers at the borders. Recalled Lataji, “I accompanied them as part of Dutt saab and Nargis ji’s Ajanta troupe to many border towns to entertain Army jawans. It was so wonderful to bring a smile to the faces of those soldiers who tirelessly toiled to protect our country. During these trips to the borders we really had to rough it out. Nargis ji made sure everyone was well looked after. Little Sanjay Dutt also accompanied us some times.”

Said Lataji, “Nargis ji was a true iron lady. She had the knack of multitasking beautifully. She could look after her home, her career and still find time to bring a smile to the soldiers’ faces.”
