Throwback: Moushumi Chatterjee’s uncompromising career is nothing short of inspirational – Times of India

Did you know that the outspoken, pretty-faced Moushumi Chatterjee, who turns 75 today, was the first choice for Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi and Gulzar’s Koshish? But she has no regrets about losing out on these roles. Whatever was rightfully hers, came to her. What didn’t come to her, wasn’t meant to be. Moushumi feels, why cry over spilt milk when there is so much to be happy about?
Here’s a look back at Moushumi’s career through her words and thoughts from previous interactions.

Moushumi did some wonderful films in her time. In an earlier interview, she had said that she always felt she got more than she deserved. She was never career-driven, but circumstances were such that she got married and immediately started working. She balanced the two boats of homemaking and acting quite well.

At the beginning of her career, her father-in-law, the great composer-singer Hemant Kumar Mukherjee, was very supportive of her. There is a little girl within Moushumi who remains intact to this day. Raj Khosla with whom she did one of her earliest films, ‘Kachche Dhaage’ told Moushumi she was childlike but not childish. Throughout her career, Moushumi refused to compromise in any way. When it came to her self-respect she admitted that she would never compromise for any role.

Moushumi has said that she was not in the industry to form relationships. She came to the film industry to work. She could never do anything that would have made her lose respect. Whenever such a situation arose Moushumi quickly opted out.

She feels, despite her determination to never compromise with her conscience, she could still do quality work, and that can only mean God was on her side. At the end of the day, she could sleep with a clear conscience.

Moushumi had some very harsh words about how she dealt with the male ego in the film industry. She feels our industry has remained male-dominated to date. Moushumi believes that women have to contend with male egos across all facets of the entertainment industry. According to her, men often exhibit behaviour reminiscent of either a 6-year-old or a 60-year-old. Moushumi also observes that some stars achieved overwhelming success at a young age and were unable to handle it.

She was last seen in Shoojit Sircar’s Piku. She has been active on screen for more than forty years and all on her own terms. She feels everyone has their own destiny. Moushumi feels she was very lucky. She doesn’t know how she lasted so long because she confessed that she has no marketing team, and no secretary. She never asked for roles, never pandered to anyone’s ego, and she also made people angry because of her uncompromising attitude.

No one can tell Moushumi what to do or not to do. Moushumi’s all-time favourite actress is Kajol. She also likes Durga Khote, Nutan and Tabu.
