NEW DELHI: For the first time, reins of three public sector blue chip companies passed on to interim heads in a day on Thursday, underlining the lack of timely succession planning and the lengthy appointment process for state-run entities.
ONGC director (exploration) Rajesh Kumar Srivastav took additional charge as chairman of India’s largest oil/gas producer. The reins of the country’s largest gas utility GAIL was taken over by its director (business development) M V Iyer. In NHPC, director (technical) Y K Chaubey took charge of the corner room.
Srivastav is the third interim head of ONGC in 17 months since Shashi Shanker retired in March 2021. He takes over from Alka Mittal, who was also the director (HR).
Srivastav has been appointed to the top job till December 31, his retirement date. He is also a contender for a regular appointment to the post under a revised search-cum-selection process with age relaxation and 3-year fixed tenure.
In GAIL, Aiyer takes over from Manoj Jain. He has a little over a year to go till his superannuation. Government headhunter PESB had on June 29 chosen Sandeep Kumar Gupta, IndianOil director (finance), as Jain’s successor. His vetting process is currently on and could take a few months before being cleared by the Cabinet’s appointments panel.
In NHPC, Chaubey takes over from A K Singh who demoted office on Thursday. The chairman’s vacancy was announced only on June 24 with August 26 as last date for applying. It could be 6-8 months before the process is completed and a regular chairman is appointed, provided things don’t go the ONGC way.
