Thousands of Miles Away from Iran, Protestors Gather to Mourn Mahsa Amini’s Death—and Fight for Change

Many Iranian figures in the public eye—including singer Snoh Aalegra , the Iranian national soccer team,  actor and activist Nazanin Boniadi, artist Shirin Neshat, and actor Golshifteh Farahani—have spoken out about Amini’s death and about the broader need for expanded women’s rights in Iran, and that urgency was in the air all over the world on Saturday.

The anger was palpable at Saturday’s protest for increased human rights in Iran.

“All Iranians are my family and are like sisters and brothers to me. I am extremely upset, angry, and frustrated that young women and teenagers with bare hands are fighting with an army and police that is supposed to protect them,” said protest attendee Gisue Hariri, adding: “A government that calls its own people ‘enemy’ and kills its own daughters and sons is not acceptable and should be condemned by the world community.”

“My father passed away recently. He never got to go back [to Iran] home and see his hometown, his friends, his family.  I would love to be able to take his ashes to Iran and have that be his resting place. And I’d like to continue carrying the torch for my family who fought so hard for their freedom.” — Nahal

“I can’t imagine not being here. Thirty-seven years ago, my family escaped during the Iran-Iraq war. While I’m very lucky that this is my life now, this is my responsibility. I have one wish and that the regime leaves during my parents’ lifetime.” — Nazy Nazhand

“The West, I think, believes that the Iranian people have wanted to live this way with the Islamic regime. But the truth is that they have never wanted it. The majority of the country has never wanted to live this way. Imagine if Trump were in power for 43 years. How would you feel? I mean, you wouldn’t want to live under those circumstances. The Iranian people don’t either.” — Nicole Najafi
