Thompson twins go back-to-back to Rockets and Pistons at NBA Draft

Does the NBA have their own set of Sedin twins? Twins Amen and Ausar Thompson, though they won’t be on the same team, were drafted back-to-back at the NBA Draft, joining the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons respectively.

Following the three names set in stone at the top of the draft, the twins went with the fourth and fifth overall picks. They’re the first two players selected from the Overtime Elite development program.

This is the seventh pair of brothers drafted in the same year and the first since the Morris twins were selected in 2011. They’re the first set of twins to both be selected in the top 10 of the Draft.

Amen, a six-foot-six guard, was widely considered the more highly touted of the two. His blend of explosiveness and playmaking made him a perfect fit alongside the young core the Rockets already have in place with former second-overall pick Jalen Green.

He scored 16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. Though he still needs to work on his shooting, only knocking down 25 per cent of his looks from deep, his physical tools are what placed him so high on draft boards.

Ausar meanwhile, who wasn’t expected to go this high, joins another young core in Detroit alongside the guard pairing of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey. Though their duo of high-lottery picks seemed to be their backcourt of the future, Ausar could bring in a new element for the Pistons to play with.

While he is a better shooter than his brother, the difference is still somewhat marginal as he knocked down 29 per cent of his shots beyond the arc last season. He’s also touted as a more gifted defender and could project as a solid creator from the wing for Detroit.
