This brand does OS updates like Velvet! And it DOES NOT make smartphones anymore

LG is reportedly releasing the Android 12 update to customers of its LG Velvet smartphone in Korea. LG does not make smartphones anymore.

LG’s smartphone business shut shop across the world in 2021 and at the time, it announced it would keep supporting its existing batch of phones. Despite no more in the business, LG is delivering on its promise as it is releasing the Android 12 update for its last flagship phone; the LG Velvet. Albeit late, the Velvet gets the Android 12 OS update with all of its security features. Sadly, there’s no information on whether the phone gets a new Android UI.

The Velvet was released in both 4G and 5G variants across the world, with India getting the 4G variant relying on the Snapdragon 845 chip. The phone drew attention for its unique design language, and its vast array of features. LG also sold it with the Dual-screen accessory for those who wanted more multitasking features. The Velvet and LG Wing were devices that were the last high-end flagships from the company.

LG delivers Android 12, but in-business brands LAG

It is nice to see LG keeping its promise of updating its Velvet users with the latest Android 12 update, albeit a bit late. Sadly, those companies that are doing more business are still offering their new phones with Android 11 onboard. Brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme are still launching new phones in 2022 with the older Android 11. And while they promise three OS updates, the effective updates come down to just two.

At the time of writing, Xiaomi’s current flagship phone for India, the Xiaomi 11T Pro is still on the Android 11 based MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition. Even the newly launched Redmi Note 11 Pro models are running on Android 11. The same case stands for the Realme 9i, Moto G51, Moto G31, and the Moto G71 5G.

On the other hand, it is Samsung that is leading the charge in terms of the latest Android updates. Almost all of Samsung’s 2022 launches come with Android 12 based One UI 4 onboard. The recently launched Galaxy F23 5G comes with Android 12, while the flagship Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy S22 series, and Galaxy S22 Ultra also launch with Android 12.

All this while, Google is already testing Android 13 Tiramisu and is expected to release it later this year.
