RANGERS hero Ally McCoist has opened up on his spell as manager at Ibrox – which he described as a ‘dream job at a nightmare time’.
The popular former striker served as Walter Smith’s assistant for three-and-a-half years before being handed the reins himself at the beginning of the 2011-12 season.
McCoist stuck with the club he had supported as a boy during its financial implosion and led them to the Third Division title in 2013 and the newly-formed League One the following year before eventually departing in December 2014.
Despite the adversity heaped upon McCoist as Rangers manager during that time, however, he insists he does not regret his time at the helm of his favourite club.
“A dream job at a nightmare time,” McCoist told the Times of his stint in charge.
“It would be some book but they wouldn’t believe it. I ended up in the High Court as a witness to the fiasco that was going on around me.
“I don’t regret [taking the job] because it was my club growing up as a boy and I played there for 15 years.
“In many ways I was masochistically pleased that I was in charge, [working with first-team coach] Ian Durrant and people that knew and cared about the club.
“But it was anything but managing. We had four players turn up for pre-season training. Absolutely crazy.
“The hardest thing wasn’t players leaving but people losing jobs who have been there for 20 years, delivering mail and doing things that people take for granted.
“That was heartbreaking. It was everything to them.”
