As a fashion editor, I find that every trip to Cannes becomes a perfect opportunity to check out the city’s signature style, which combines natural simplicity with a touch of extravagant flamboyance. On my latest visit I noticed two particular shoes were everywhere, from the streets and the beaches to the top boutiques.
Wherever you go in the South of France—Saint Tropez, Provence, and Cannes as well—you’ll notice that there are some trainers that are ubiquitous and clearly local favorites. In Cannes, the favorite is clearly Golden Goose. The Italian company was founded in 2007 by husband-and-wife team Alessandro Gallo and Francesca Rinaldo. They are casual but high-end at once, handmade in Italy with quality materials: calfskin leather, premium cotton laces, and cotton lining. With their vintage aesthetics, including careful distressing by hand, they are a one-of-a-kind product that the French are obsessed with right now.
Completely flat slides are also a staple on the streets of Cannes and elsewhere in the South of France. They mix comfort with a touch of style and sophistication. The most famous and coveted ones are the leather Oran slides from Hermès, with an H-strap that has been an iconic element for over 20 years. But other alternatives, such as Saint Laurent’s Tribute flat sandals, can also be seen on the streets and beaches of the French city.

On the other hand, completely flat sandals (popularly known as ‘shovels’) are also seen non-stop on the streets of Cannes and are a staple of southern French style. A shoe that mixes the necessary comfort to face the hot days typical of the area with a touch of style and a certain sophisticated air. The most famous and desired in the city are the Hermès Orán , the classic flat leather design with an H-shaped strap that has more than 20 years of history.
