The U.K. Just Approved a COVID Booster Vaccine That Could Help Tackle New Variants
In what feels like an increasingly rare (and desperately needed) good piece of COVID-related news, Britain just became the first country to authorize a coronavirus vaccine that would target both the original virus and the Omicron variant that has become dominant within the U.S. The BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants were also addressed by the new vaccine to an encouraging degree of success.
In a statement on Monday, the U.K.’s Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency said that they had given the green light for the new booster to be administered to adults. Half of the vaccine, which is made by Moderna, is engineered to take on the original variant, while the other half is intended to target Omicron; side effects from the new vaccine are apparently mild and similar in nature to those incurred by the original Moderna booster dose. “What this (combination) vaccine gives us is a sharpened tool in our armory to help protect us against this disease as the virus continues to evolve,” Dr. June Raine, head of the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency, said in a statement.
Nearly 60% of Americans had been infected with COVID as of this spring; with winter on the horizon, there couldn’t be a better time for the medical community to land on a successful vaccine response intended specifically for new variants.
