The Sweet Story Behind Elle Fanning’s Fresh Daisy Crown for the Met Gala
Chanel’s signature camellias may have been trending on the Met Gala red carpet, but Elle Fanning chose to put the spotlight on an altogether different flower on the night. The actor added a romantic daisy crown to her bespoke Vivienne Westwood gown—a sweet nod to one of her earliest memories of working with Karl Lagerfeld, whose body of work informed the 2023 dress code.
“When I first heard that the Met Ball theme was honoring Karl Lagerfeld, I started to reflect on memories we had shared together,” she told Vogue. “The memory that stood out was when he shot me for his Little Black Jacket book. I was 13. When I look at that portrait it’s like a time capsule to that time of my life.”
Lagerfeld’s photograph of Elle finds her wearing the classic black Chanel jacket that was the subject of the book draped over her shoulders. “Though we all wore the same jacket, Karl let our individual styles and personalities inform how it should be worn,” Fanning recalls. “For my portrait he put a daisy crown on my head, and put the jacket over the white dress I arrived in.”
