The Princess of Wales Greets Boston in a Tartan Dress

Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, have touched down in Boston for their first visit stateside in eight years. And though they’ve been on U.S. soil for less than a day, Middleton has already turned out two noteworthy looks.

The first was the smart suit she wore to deplane, which coordinated with her husband’s similarly dapper attire. The second, for a meeting with Boston’s mayor Michelle Wu and an address to the city, is a green tartan dress from Burberry, an Alexander McQueen coat, a Mulberry handbag, and Shyla London earrings.

The dress is not only appropriate for the festive season, but also serves as a subtle nod to St. Andrew’s Day, which honors the patron saint of Scotland. (Not coincidentally, the royal couple first met while studying at the University of St Andrews in Fife, and the princess has often worn plaid during visits to the country over the years.) The color felt especially fitting after the couple’s first official event in Boston ended with the mayor lighting the city’s landmarks green.

The couple is in the U.S. for the second annual Earthshot Prize Awards ceremony on Friday, which will honor five environmentalists selected by a council that includes Prince William and Sir David Attenborough. Addressing a gathered crowd braving the rain, William said, “Catherine and I firmly believe that we all have it in ourselves to achieve great things, and that human beings have the ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve.”
