THE NOTEBOOK: Michail Antonio shows why staying at West Ham wouldn’t be all bad
West Ham booked an FA Cup fifth-round clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford after a comfortable 2-0 win against Derby on Monday night.
Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio scored the goals as David Moyes’ side – struggling in the Premier League – put their woes behind them with a confident victory against Paul Warne’s League One outfit.
Here, Sportsmail‘s KIERAN GILL has picked out some of the things you may have missed from Pride Park on Monday…

Antonio pulls his socks up and earns forgiveness after eyeing January exit
When Michail Antonio emerged for the start of this match, his shorts were twisted tight, not unlike John Barnes back in the day. A ploy to frighten the opposition with those muscular thighs of his, perhaps.
Yet it is his socks that West Ham’s manager David Moyes wants his 32-year-old striker to pull up after his recent revelation. Antonio used his podcast to say he was in talks with rival clubs ahead of January’s deadline day.
That was news to Moyes, who would prefer he focuses on working hard for his current employers. But if anyone has earned West Ham’s forgiveness for a few misguided comments, it’s Antonio, who has been a club servant since 2015.
He started here and there was no sulking – only a proper performance as he was involved in the build-up to Jarrod Bowen’s opener before later heading home West Ham’s second goal. Antonio isn’t going anywhere in this window.
Not while fellow strikers Gianluca Scamacca and Danny Ings are injured. His team needs him. Staying isn’t all bad, Antonio – you’re only two-and-a-half years from a testimonial!

At 7.20pm, it was confirmed: the winner of this match would face Manchester United at Old Trafford. As if Pride Park’s faithful needed any more incentive to get the old place rocking.
‘You’ve heard the draw, ‘ent ya?’ one steward could be heard saying to supporters coming in, making sure they knew what awaited if they could help Derby to a win. Sadly for the League One team, they never truly tested West Ham.
Note to Moyes: Criticise Jarrod more!
Moyes has been brutally honest about Bowen, saying his numbers have not been acceptable this season. To which Bowen has responded with two Premier League goals against Everton and an FA Cup opener here at Derby.
Moyes kept getting a pen and paper out of his jacket pocket. Watching Bowen continue his upturn in form, he must have been writing: ‘Criticise Jarrod more.’

And central midfielder Flynn Downes (pictured) stepped in well for the rested star Declan Rice
The northerners sing about how soft the southerners are. And the southerners tell the northerners they want to go home.
All in good fun and West Ham embraced their cockney roots here with a Mary Poppins-themed chant that went: ‘Chim chiminey, chim chiminey, chim chim cher-oo, we are those b****** in claret and blue!’
One change to Derby’s starting line-up, six for West Ham, including resting Declan Rice. Risky from the Premier League team, given their opponents were unbeaten in their last 19 games in all competitions (if you don’t count the Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat by Liverpool after drawing 0-0).
In came Flynn Downes for his first start since November in Rice’s place. Terrific talent, Downes, and he looked comfortable in central midfield. More minutes should follow for the 24-year-old.
Don’t be surprised if West Ham sign a centre back by the end of the January transfer window
Dons disaster is distant memory for West Ham
A trip to face a League One team in the FA Cup’s fourth round in January? West Ham have been here before. This brought back memories of losing 4-2 to Wimbledon in 2019.
I remember that defeat distinctly because Manuel Pellegrini took umbrage with me in the Kingsmeadow tunnel afterwards for asking him about Marko Arnautovic, the club having bizarrely announced his new contract at full time.
Pellegrini ended up storming off, no doubt muttering a few unprintable words about that reporter with the dodgy haircut.
Thankfully there was no walking away from David Moyes last night, even though he knew questions about deadline day would be a topic afterwards, win or lose.
Do not be surprised if West Ham sign a central defender on Tuesday. That’s an area that Moyes wants to bolster.
