Fate would have it that the ultimate underdog Stetson Bennett would lead the Georgia football team to its first national championship since 1980.
Underrecruited out of high school. Having to wear a U.S. Postal Service cap at 7-on-7’s to stand out. Undersized, underappreciated, it did not matter. This 5-foot-11 signal-caller from Blackshear, Georgia made all of Dawg Nation incredibly proud on Monday night. The Mailman delivered on the biggest of stages whenever seemingly everyone in the country wanted him benched at halftime.
All it took was four quarters for Bennett to become a living legend, as he slayed the dragon to do the impossible for Georgia.

Bennett was a walk-on and had to go to junior college before returning to Athens. Buried on the depth chart and given no chance to succeed, Bennett took advantage of every opportunity he had the last two years. It was not always smooth, but he quarterbacked this team to its greatest season ever. 14-1. SEC East champions. Orange Bowl champions and now national champions.
When this team is talked about in the annals, it will be the defense that got them here first. Then, it will be the head coach who loved his alma mater more than just about anyone. After that, it was the explosive playmakers on offense that never said die. And of course, there will be The Mailman. He is a new generation’s Buck Belue, but without a Herschel Walker, he had to carry the Dawgs.
No matter what comes next, Bennett will never have to buy another drink in the state of Georgia.
