The Idol Looks Like an Instant Indie Sleaze Gem

Living up to his name, The Weeknd gave us a fabulous surprise on Sunday. The singer, who is currently embarking on his After Hours til Dawn tour, debuted the first trailer for The Idol during a performance at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. The show introduces itself as “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.” Okay. Say more, please.

The gritty HBO Max drama is a collaboration between Abel and Euphoria mastermind Sam Levinson. First announced late last year, the show will center on “a self-help guru and leader of a modern-day cult, who develops a complicated relationship with an up-and-coming pop idol.” Our biggest obsession in the trailer: the visual buffet of indie sleaze fashion worn by Lily-Rose Depp, who stars as our wayward pop star.

A twisted love story between a sordid club owner and a fame-hungry pop star, to be honest, feels like the narrative encapsulation of indie sleaze. (What’s indie sleaze? Think of the grimy dive bar-leaning style of Sky Ferreira, Sienna Miller, and Ke$ha during the 2010s that’s recently been resurrected.)

In the trailer, Depp dresses in heightened LA club fashion. There’s elbow-length gloves, lace dresses, and lots of barely-there bra tops. At the dramatic end of the trailer, the underboob has a starring role.

The vision feels very in line with today’s fashion. Flesh is in. Brands like Mugler and Thom Browne have recently delivered viral runway moments with hyper-revealing pieces.

A release date for The Idol has not been announced yet, but filming reportedly wrapped this month. We’ll be waiting.
