The Fantasy of Puppets & Puppets Comes to SSENSE
Puppets & Puppets has been one of the more fantastical brands to have popped up over the past few years in New York City. Created in 2019 by Detroit-based designer Carly Mark, Puppets & Puppets made headlines with its fairytale absurdist creations. Models walked on egg carton platform shoes, bra tops with cups as fried eggs, and enormous panniers—one of which I wore as a fashion-forward social distancing experiment last year.
Mark didn’t start producing her creations for sale until her fall 2021 collection, this time whittling down that far-flung chic into more wearable pieces, like nubby knit sweaters and sleek, tailored suiting. The pieces have been noticed, too. As of today, SSENSE has picked up the collection. “We started producing during the pandemic, which felt simultaneously like a challenge and very free,” says Mark. “Everything has taken a bit longer to produce, but we’ve also had the time and mental space in the past year and a half to really work out what we want.”
Puppets & Puppets fans will be able to get their hands on those bizarre-chic creations from fall 2021, like a leather shoulder bag with a cookie stamped on it, a pixel grid knit sweater, and a floral print shirt with XL sleeves. There’s some exclusive garb, too—courtesy of SSENSE. Mark has transformed her red knit onesie into a top with those magical details like a chest to navel slit and a hot pink scarf attachment. Also in store? Multicolored knit shorts and a darling pink and red knit bag reminiscent of a slice of a cake. It’s all very sweet, which is Puppets & Puppets at its core, and now with this more user-friendly collection, everyone can take a bite.
