The Buffalo Mass Shooting Suspect Will Be Charged With Federal Hate Crimes

Payton S. Gendron, the 18-year-old suspect charged with shooting 13 people—11 of whom were Black, and 10 of whom died—at a Buffalo supermarket last month has been charged with multiple federal hate crimes, the U.S. Justice Department said on Wednesday. Gendron is charged with 10 counts of hate crime resulting in death, three counts of hate crime involving bodily injury, 10 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a violent crime, and three counts of use and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.

A grand jury in New York indicted Gendron on all 26 counts on June 1, with a criminal complaint filed on Wednesday that noted “Gendron’s motive for the mass shooting was to prevent Black people from replacing white people and eliminating the white race, and to inspire others to commit similar attacks.”

Gendron’s posts online have shown that he planned his crime for months, stockpiling weapons and detailing his desire to enact mass murder upon Buffalo’s Black community; Attorney General Merrick Garland said on Wednesday that the Justice Department would be investigating the shootings as “a hate crime and an act of racially motivated violent extremism.”
