The Bride Wore Galia Lahav to Her Darkly Romantic Wedding on the Island of Maui
The inspiration for the reception, on the other hand, was the sun, moon, and stars. The dance floor featured an enormous vibrant yellow and orange sun that was designed by Bernard Maisner, who also designed the sun and stars on our invitation. There were large three-dimensional gold stars hanging from wires above to complement the already-breathtaking Maui starry night. Large, red glass-blown hearts hung from the trees, and there was an arch, made entirely of flowers, in the shape of a sun with “J + D.”
Next, the party kicked off with a wild hora and was quickly followed by dancing to “Baby Got Back.” From that point on, the dance floor wasn’t empty until everyone was seated for dinner and speeches. “Our older siblings and parents showed off and gave the best, most brilliant, and funniest speeches that had the whole room wrecked,” Jade says. “After my dad’s speech, he and I danced to a slow song that was suddenly interrupted by a loud record scratch. The song changed, and we began a choreographed flash mob with all my siblings, their significant others, Dylan, and my stepmom. Everyone went crazy and was so shocked.” This then segued into Jade and Dylan’s first dance to “All I Want Is You” by U2. “This was the moment I remember most vividly from the night,” Jade says. “Truthfully, I think it was the first time I exhaled and felt centered enough to look around and soak it all in.”
For dinner, guests were seated at long tables lined with bunches of round cream candles and sunflowers—the bride’s favorite flower. The meal was served family-style and featured the couple’s favorite pastas, Spago’s tuna poke cones, lobster ceviche, steak, fish, and pizza. For dessert, each guest was given their own warm skillet with a gooey cookie and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
For the after-party, Jade changed into a Bottega Veneta sequin dress that reflected whatever colors were around her: including a zebra-striped dance floor and walls draped in red velvet. “There was plenty of lounge seating with silver gravy boats with cherries spilling out and dark purple candles on the coffee tables,” Jade says. “It was all very Morticia Addams.” The entrance was a “tunnel of love” lined with gold twinkly lights and red mylar balloons, and there was a “shoe valet” when you arrived that would check your shoes at the door and give you a pair of custom “J+D” hotel slippers so they could comfortably dance to DJ Cassidy. “The food was very important to me and Dylan at every event but especially the afterparty, because hell hath no fury like hungry late-night wedding guests,” Jade says. “So we had a cereal bar with all the greatest hits, pounds of french fries in branded ‘J+D’ containers, and served a copy of our favorite dish that we lived off of in college from a restaurant in Coral Gables called Havana Harry’s. We got the recipe and went through multiple taste tests for their famous chicken vaca frita, and it was beyond worth it.”
Now that it’s all over, Jade’s overwhelming feeling when reflecting on the weekend is one of gratitude. “It was a whirlwind of magic and happiness I’ve never felt before, and the excitement and love our guests shared with us was electric,” Jade remembers. “It was the most vibrant, magnetic, and warm weekend, and I’m so proud of the festival of love we created together.”
