December is the holiday season—prime time for glitzy parties, and glamorous outfits to wear to them. In Hollywood, this festive approach to dressing is well underway, as well: This week, the best dressed stars on the red carpet were those who opted for drama, choosing looks that came complete with voluminous silhouettes, bold colors and textural motifs. It was not a week for wallflowers.

At the 2023 Fashion Awards in London, for instance, Amal Clooney turned heads in her glittering, gold Atelier Versace gown. Who needs jewelry when your frock shines on its own? The same went for actor Taylor Russell’s Loewe look at the same event: Her silky white gown was completed with an intricate bodice covered in shapely crystal flowers.

Overall it was a week for maximalism—though, all of the more-is-more designs managed to still feel refined. At The Color Purple premiere in L.A., star Fantasia Barrino wore a sleek Sergio Hudson blazer and skirt that was entirely covered in polka dots. At a Hollywood Reporter brunch in L.A., Kerry Washington chose Prada’s blue cocktail gown, which was appliquéd with fabric florals. While it was textural to the max, the simple A-line skirt silhouette made it feel totally elegant.

As for other style hits of the week? Kristen Stewart’s Chanel bell-shaped tweed dress, Kate Middleton’s head-to-toe cream caroling look, and Adele’s pinstriped Schiaparelli suit all made an impact.
