The Best Dressed Stars Favored the Unconventional This Week

There must have been something in the air this week: On the red carpets, the best dressed celebrities favored avant garde dressing and bold, architectural silhouettes. Actor Gugu Mbatha-Raw kicked things off at the premiere of Surface in New York City, when she slipped into an artfully-draped Alexander McQueen gown in green. “There’s something about this dress that’s very feminine, but it also has an edge to it, which is something you always find with McQueen,” the star told Vogue of the dress. “I love that there’s a lot of fabric and pleating. It’s very interesting—it’s not uniform.” Also at the premiere of the new AppleTV+ series was Reese Witherspoon, whose little white dress embraced Schiaparelli’s decorative slashes.

Of course, if we’re talking about statement looks in Hollywood, it wouldn’t be a true roundup without Björk. The Icelandic singer performed at the 2022 Olavsfest in Trondheim, Norway this week wearing a three-dimensional cage dress by Noir Kei Ninomiya, complete with a black Loewe bodysuit underneath. In Capri, Italy, Jennifer Lopez also did performance style right when she performed at the amFar gala wearing a custom Roberto Cavalli look—dramatic feathered cape and all.

Even the week’s more subtle looks took risks. Take Keke Palmer at the Berlin, Germany premiere of Nope. Her David Koma black gown had visual interest, thanks to the armor-like detailing around the slit. At the House of Dragons premiere in L.A., Emma D’Arcy also embraced Vetements’s oversized black suit (baggy is in!), finishing it off with platform Balenciaga Crocs—an unlikely red carpet shoe, sure, but a totally cool one.
