In their six seasons together in Boston, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have made the Eastern Conference Finals four times and were up 2-1 on the Golden State Warriors in last season’s NBA Finals before losing the final three games. As great as this era of Celtics basketball has been, a team can only flame out in the postseason so many times before it becomes clear it’s time for a change. First-year head coach Joe Mazzulla did an admirable job after being thrust into the role last offseason but was outcoached by Erik Spoelstra in the ECF. Still, he may have shown enough to stick around. Tatum is the franchise star, so it’s unlikely he will go anywhere, which leaves Brown as the puzzle piece most likely to be moved elsewhere in a deal. However, Brown made an All-NBA team this season, making him eligible for the supermax extension, leaving the C’s with a difficult decision to make. If it were up to Tatum, the decision would be simple. “It’s extremely important. He’s one of the best players in this league. Plays both ends of the ball. We’re still relatively young. And he’s accomplished a lot so far in his career. So, I think it’s extremely important.”
