That took ‘ducking’ forever: Apple will improve autocorrect on iPhones – Times of India
Using a language model and ML
Apple, during the WWDC keynote, revealed that autocorrect will now use a transformer language model and on device machine learning (ML) model to make autocorrect better. The models will work in tandem for word prediction, which will improve the experience as well as accuracy for users.
Not just that but Apple has also refreshed the autocorrect design in a sense to support better typing, fixing grammatical errors and even offer sentence-level autocorrections. It’s a huge leap from what and how autocorrect currently exists.
Apple also said that users will now receive predictive text recommendations inline as they type. What this will do is that it will enable adding entire words. It will also complete sentences by just tapping the space bar, making text entry faster than ever. It could very much be like how predictive text works in Google’s apps.
The improved autocorrect will roll out with iOS 17 and should work smoothly on iPad and Macs as well. Apple hasn’t revealed the exact timeline of iOS 17 rollout but expect it to happen sometime around September or October.
It is a feature that was much needed as more often than not people do end up in awkward and embracing typo situations because of autocorrect. Apple has taken a long time to fix it but hopefully it will help users avoid silly errors because of autocorrect.
