‘Thank God’ box office collection day 1: Ajay Devgn starrer fails to beat ‘Ram Setu’, earns only Rs 8.10 crore – Times of India

Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra starrer ‘Thank God’ hit the screens on the festive occasion of Diwali, clashing with Akshay Kumar’s ‘Ram Setu’ at the box office. While Akshay’s action adventure drama has earned Rs 15 crore, ‘Thank God’ managed to rake in only Rs 8.10 crore on its opening day.

Both the films were banking on the festival holidays of Diwali to pack a punch at the box office. The advance booking for ‘Thank God’ was dull, but the film has managed to start off on a positive note. While ‘Ram Setu’ is leading in Gujarat, Rajasthan and CI circuits, ‘Thank God’ is also fast catching up. Ahead of its release, ‘Thank God’ faced a lot of protests for allegedly hurting religious sentiments and derogatory references to Lord Chitragupta. While submitting the film for certification, the makers decided to change the name of Ajay’s character from from Chitragupt to ‘CG’ and his associate Yamdoot’s to simply ‘YD’.

Helmed by Indra Kumar, ‘Thank God’ is a fantasy entertainer featuring Rakul Preet Singh as the leading lady opposite Sidharth. Speaking about the role Rakul had shared, “When I was listening to the narration I was laughing. Indu ji has a very different way of narration. I think what you need for a comedy is great writing. You need a visionary, you need a director, who can execute that writing. I think we were not so stressed. Because Indra ji has been making films like this I really feel that he understands the pulse of the audience. So as an actor, you surrender to the director and you know that he knows his timing.”
