On Tuesday, an 18-year-old gunman named Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde and killed 18 children and a school teacher. According to reports, the school serves about 570 children in second through fourth grades, 90 per cent of which are Hispanic students.

Soon after the incident, several stars took to social media to condemn the government for not imposing stricter gun control laws.

Singer Selena Gomez, who is from Texas, expressed her anger and frustration in tweets that read, “Today in my home state of Texas 18 innocent students were killed while simply trying to get an education. A teacher killed doing her job; an invaluable yet sadly underappreciated job.”

Singer Taylor Swift also tweeted about the ‘murders’ and shared an emotional video of basketball coach Steve Kerr’s speech. “Filled with rage and grief, and so broken by the murders in Uvalde. By Buffalo, Laguna Woods and so many others. By the ways in which we, as a nation, have become conditioned to unfathomable and unbearable heartbreak. Singer Olivia Rodrigo called for “stricter gun control laws” during her performance at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles and said, “I wish we would never have to worry about our safety or our lives at places that are dedicated to our learning and growing. Joining the host of Hollywood stars was Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, who shared a news clipping on her Instagram handle and wrote, “Condolences are not enough. There needs to be more done. So tragic.”

A U.S. senator who came to Congress representing the Connecticut community where 26 elementary school students and educators were killed nearly a decade ago begged his colleagues Tuesday, as the latest school shooting unfolded, to pass legislation addressing the nation’s gun violence problem.

“What are we doing?” Murphy asked. The Democrat, who represented Newtown during his time as a U.S. congressman, urged his colleagues to find a compromise.

“I’m here on this floor to beg — to literally get down on my hands and knees — to beg my colleagues. Find a path forward here. Work with us to find a way to pass laws that make this less likely,” he said.

According to the latest reports on the Texas shooting, Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, in an interview with Fox News, “We do know that there were multiple children that did survive, that were injured. I do not have the exact number at this time.”
