Without fanfare, Teurn Studios is growing apace, allowing Anna Teurnell to give up her second job and move the business from her apartment to a new work/retail space in Stockholm city. There, light pours in from large windows illuminating racks hung with the designer’s delectable designs. The hullabaloo around “quiet luxury” reveals that there is a collective “sweet tooth” for the clean-lined and tactile designs the brand is known for.
“You called the [last] collection a bit of candy minimalism and I fully agree on it,” said the designer on a call. “I use the word caramel for beige and brown. I like this mix when you do more minimalistic things, then you add something that is playful and sometimes happy, sometimes like candy.” Come to think of it, the ruffled-drawstring necklines on a taffy-colored bonded leather maxi dress and a black licorice tunic of the same material look a bit like the twisted ends of candy wrappers.
Teurnell’s grail, a “cozy elegance,” is present throughout. Gray melange separates emphasize the former and add a sporty element to the offering. (Without being referential, they hark back to Norma Kamali’s innovation of introducing activewear into ready-to-wear.) More polished is a perfectly cut beige pantsuit, its elegance undercut with cool shoes. Accessories are the “sours” that complement the sweet at Teurn Studio. You can find stunning separates, shoes, or a belt here to add what you already have; much like with Sweden’s pick-and-mix candy tradition, the selection is based on your own tastes.
