Tesco’s chair accused of inappropriate behaviour towards 4 women: Report
Britain’s biggest retailer firm Tesco’s chair John Allan has been accused of inappropriate behaviour towards four women, The Guardian newspaper reported on Tuesday.
However, the UK’s supermarket group said that it had ‘received no complaints or concerns formally or informally’ regarding the alleged offences, reported Bloomberg, adding that one the incident allegedly took place t its annual general meeting (AGM) last year.
According to the Guardian report, Allan, in June 2022 annual general meeting, allegedly touched the bottom of a senior member of Tesco staff. Also in May 2019, during the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) annual dinner, he allegedly touched the bottom of a member of staff.
Among others accusations say that Allan made nappropriate remarks on those occasions as well as separate, similar comments to two other female members of CBI staff in November 2019 and in 2021 respectively. The Guardian report mentioned that few women were offended by the alleged actions and considered his behaviour to be sexual harassment.
Though, the 74-year-old Allan denied all but one of the allegations.
On the issue of allegations, Tesco said, as reported by the UK daily, John Allan’s conduct has never been the subject of a complaint during his tenure as chair of Tesco.” They requested that anyone with concerns or information to contact a confidential phone line.
It is to be known that Allan as president of the organisation between 2018 and 2020 and then vice-president until October 2021. He was also the chair of the UK’s biggest supermarket since 2015.
