Tesco Bengaluru – where family is everything

More than a year into Covid, operational challenges of running businesses in the midst of a global pandemic have been dissected and discussed ad nauseum. In a VUCA world not seen in a generation, organisations have been required to think on their feet, evolve, adapt and respond at a pace like never before.

During this, the all-too-human face of operational challenges often slips into the background. Some organisations however, have relentlessly focused on the well-being of their soul and spirit – their colleagues.

At Tesco Bengaluru, our colleagues are considered family, and when your family is in crisis, you pull together. In an effort with no precedent and the likes of which hasn’t yet been seen elsewhere, early last year Tesco Bengaluru launched a daily 30 second Pulse survey. Every single day, the survey captured how its 4000+ colleagues were feeling as the world raged and imploded around them. Concerns were voiced through a simple platform; information was collated in real-time and measures were deployed to address issues on a war footing.

In short order, a slew of initiatives were rolled out to help colleagues through this difficult time. For physical health, two eminent labs were partnered with for home testing and a premier hospital chain was collaborated with for consultations. For the mental health aspect of things (which has arguably taken an even heavier toll than the former), a helpline-based support system was quickly set up for colleagues as well as families. To try and lift some of the logistical load of working from home while battling Covid, a free meal service for colleagues was launched from Tesco kitchens. Of course, we were one of the first organisations to start vaccination drives and enhanced insurance coverage to support our colleagues and their families.

“On a more personal note, leaders encouraged candid conversations and communication with a deep sense of empathy, helping teams through myriad challenges, both professional and personal.

“Our endeavor has always been to keep our colleagues and their families at the heart of everything we do at Tesco and we’ve done what is right rather than the right things to support each other during these unprecedented times. Our colleagues make us who we are and are the foundation of the impact we seek to create. We treat our colleagues how they would like to be treated and this is intrinsic to the Tesco values. Amongst all these disruptions, our colleagues were single minded in their relentless focus to feed nations and serve our shoppers a little better every day!”, said Sumit Mitra, CEO, Tesco Business Services & Tesco Bengaluru.

The aim of building a colleague-first approach, focused on colleague health and well-being, helped win the confidence of colleagues across the board and build a sustainable response to the pandemic and an uncertain future. The sincere effort has been appreciated by its people and Tesco Bengaluru was ranked 25th in the Great Place To Work’s (GPTW) 2021 India survey – a reflection of the deep trust and confidence reposed in the brand.

As we pause in the midst of waves to take a breath, Tesco Bengaluru continues to look out for its colleagues in more ways than one and weather the storm as a family.
