Telfar Gives New York Fashion Week Its Wow Moment

“There’s a bigger thing going on with how people operate. The old way of doing things and putting your work out, it didn’t feel right,” said Clemens. The Liberian-American designer has consistently marched to the beat of his own drum and in the last couple of years his tireless commitment to independence above all else has paid off exponentially. Where other brands have struggled to stay afloat in the pandemic, Telfar has thrived in ways few could have foreseen. “In January 2019, we set the date of January 2020 to be out of the fashion system. We couldn’t keep investing ourselves in something we didn’t control,” said creative director Babak Radboy, who has worked closely with Clemens for years. “When you take a couple of years to make something, that’s when you can make something at the right price, where the person you want to actually get the thing can actually buy it.”

The plan is to bring the TV channel into the shopping space, like a big reality show,” he said. Music is on his mind too; apparently there’s an album in the works. “I’m feeling so good about where we are right now, we’re just having so much fun.”
