JOHANNESBURG – Captain of Goliath Gaming’s FIFA squad, Julio ‘Beast’ Bianchi, and Competitive FIFA player for Giga Hub, Kaylan Moodley, teamed up under Goliath Gaming and are currently representing Africa at the FIFAe Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia.

The South African team is hoping to better the country’s ranking of 25th in the world at the pinnacle event for competitive FIFA esports clubs happening from 6-9 July 2023, with a prize pool of $ 1 million.

“The best part is meeting all the players (the best FIFA players from around the world), playing amongst them and making history. Lastly and importantly, representing everyone back home – my family, my team and my country,” said Bianchi.

The FIFAe Club World Cup is the final event of the 2023 FIFAe Club Series organised by FIFA. The best clubs throughout the year have qualified for this event, with Team South Africa competing in Group C.

“All the teams are potential champions, some have won in the past and others are currently doing extremely well, so it’s a difficult group nonetheless. But I am very excited to play versus RB Leipzig and Atletico Madrid x Riders. They have some of the best players and it’s always special playing against the best of the best,” said Bianchi to Eyewitness News.

The competition is a standard 2v2 format, with 24 clubs split into 4 groups of 6 clubs. Each game counts as a single match with no extra time or penalties. The winning team receives 3 points, drawing teams receive 1 point and the losing teams receive 0 points.

The top 4 clubs from each group will be advanced to the knockout stage.

Sharing with Eyewitness News on how he got into eSports, Moodley said it was a family pass time that has turned into a career.

“Everyone in my family played video games and they were all very competitive so that, of course, passed through to me from a very young age. I’ve always enjoyed watching football, so as soon as I heard there was a football game called FIFA, I immediately dived straight into it.”

Hosted in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, the Gamers8 festival: The Land of Heroes, which is organised by the Saudi Esports Federation, is one of the biggest esports events in the world.

“I would have never been able to see so much of the world without playing FIFA competitively. Also being able to compete against the world’s best FIFA players is a feeling like no other,” said Moodley.

Globally, the gaming industry has evolved into a fully-fledged career path, with some schools taking advantage of the growth in the sector by offering gaming scholarships.

Moodley said in order to develop the sport at grassroots level, the country needed to accept that gaming was an actual career path.

“Firstly, there needs to be more acceptance of gaming as an actual career. It needs to be introduced into schools from a young age to actually see if someone would be highly interested in taking a career path in gaming.”

Research indicates that there are more than 11 million gamers in South Africa.

According to Rhodes University, in 2018, the global gaming industry consisted of 2.3 billion consumers, who spent nearly $138 billion, on games.

“Improved infrastructure and accessibility as well as support from external sources. We have the potential to make history on the international stage as we’ve shown in many gaming titles. It’s all about getting the much-needed support (financial and otherwise) and backing to continue chasing our dreams and goals with the hopes of being successful in what we love,” said Bianchi.

The FIFAe Club World Cup 2023 will take place from 6 to 9 July, the FIFAe Nations Cup 2023 from 11 to 14 July and the FIFAe World Cup 2023 from 16 to 19 July.
