This edition of the T20 World Cup was meant to be played in India, but had to be moved to the UAE and Oman due to the Covid-19 situation in India. Though it was a last minute option, the ICC and all the home Boards would have taken notice of just how much of a role the toss played in the tournament.
Australia finally won the T20 World Cup title and interestingly Australian captain Aaron Finch won six of the seven tosses he was a part of.
Here’s a look at the stats of the three venues used for the Super 12 stage, semi-finals and final, and how the toss was the boss at the mega event:
SHEIKH ZAYED STADIUM, ABU DHABI
A total of 11 matches were played at this venue and 7 matches were won by the team which won the toss. Dew played a crucial role in the second innings and made the bowlers toil hard in the UAE conditions in the second innings. In short, win the toss and elect to field first was almost a sure shot mantra to win matches. Out of the 11 matches that were played here, the toss played a big role in 7 matches where the teams winning the toss and opting to field first walked away with full points.
SHARJAH CRICKET STADIUM, SHARJAH
The iconic stadium hosted 9 matches in the tournament. The toss factor helped teams a lot here too. In a total of 9 matches played, teams which won the toss won five of the nine encounters.
DUBAI INTERNATIONAL CRICKET STADIUM, DUBAI
The Dubai International Cricket Stadium hosted the highest number of matches in the tournament (Super 12 stage onwards) and the toss played perhaps the most vital role at this venue. The captains who called it right didn’t give a second thought to opting to field first. With conditions suitable for batters in the night and tough for bowlers, due to the dew settling in, captains winning the toss got the job half done by calling it right. A total of 13 matches were played at his venue and the teams which won the toss emerged as winners on 11 occasions.
