American Sydney McLaughlin shattered her own 400 metres hurdles world record to clinch her first individual World Championships gold, while compatriot Michael Norman claimed the men’s 400m crown and Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo won the women’s event.
McLaughlin blazed home in 50.68 seconds to set the first world record at this year’s championships, finishing well clear of silver medallist Femke Bol of the Netherlands. Defending champion Dalilah Muhammad finished third.
Miller-Uibo cruised to 400m gold in 49.11s to win her first Worlds title. In the men’s event, Norman charged to victory in 44.29s for his first Worlds crown. Former Olympics and world champion Kirani James of Grenada was runner-up. Reuters

BCCI to go economical on age fraud detection
The Indian cricket board (BCCI) will be using a software on an experimental basis to detect age fraud alongside the existing TW3 method with an aim to save costs by as much as 80%. The current method costs Rs 2,400 per bone test and takes about three-four days, while the proposed use of BoneXpert software will give instantaneous results at a cost of only Rs 288.

Charles Leclerc used help from Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. to beat Formula One leader Max Verstappen and take pole position for the French Grand Prix today. Sainz had nothing at stake since he was starting from the back of the grid after multiple engine-part changes, so Ferrari used him to give Leclerc a tow on his two runs in Q3.

England skittled out South Africa for 83 to win the rain-affected second One-day international by 118 runs and send their three-match series to a decider. The start of the match at Old Trafford of Friday was delayed for almost four hours, meaning it was reduced to 29 overs per side and England scrambled to post a total of 201 after being put into bat.

Glamorgan’s Northeast hits 410 not out vs Leicestershire
Glamorgan’s Sam Northeast struck the highest score in the English County Championship for 28 years as he made 410 not out against Leicestershire today. Northeast reached his quadruple century before lunch but Glamorgan declared on 795-5, depriving him of the chance to go past Brian Lara’s record 501 not out for Warwickshire in 1994.

American player Bernarda Pera stunned top-seeded Anett Kontaveit 6-2 6-4 to win the Hamburg European Open today for her second title in seven days. The 81st-ranked Pera, who won her first WTA title in Budapest last week, saved three of the four break points she faced. — Agencies
