Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque laughs off the club’s east vs west rivalry with the Wanderers

Sydney FC great Alex Brosque has laughed off what he believes is a manufactured class-war rivalry pitting Western Sydney Wanderers supporters against their eastern suburbs counterparts ahead of the derby this Saturday.

Brosque, 39, one of the Sky Blues’ most decorated players, grew up in Sydney’s west himself, emerging as a teenage star when playing for Marconi Stallions. 

Antagonistic suggestions from Wanderers boss Marko Rudan that fans in the east ‘have it easier in life’ than their rivals in the ‘working class west’ made Brosque smile.

‘I had a chuckle when “Rudes” made those comments,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Whatever works. I still live in the western suburbs myself and I believe Marko lives somewhere near the east.

‘The fans eat up those type of comments, it is motivating and filters through to the players.

‘All the talk adds to the atmosphere to what I believe is the biggest game this season in the A-League.’

Brosque, who is earning plenty of plaudits for his football analysis on SEN Radio and Channel 10, couldn’t recall the last time both clubs were in the top six, hence his statement.

It makes this weekend’s derby at Allianz Stadium all the more enticing, especially given the ledger in the rivalry sits at one win each this season.

Adding to the spice were scathing comments from recently recalled Socceroo Brandon Borrello in the second derby last month.

A fired-up Borrello declared Steve Corica’s men were ‘ bang average’ and ‘deserved nothing’ following a 1-0 victory at Commbank Stadium – and it didn’t go unnoticed.

Brosque was all for it.

‘Good on him, Brandon is entitled to his opinion … it shows his passion and will to win,’ he said.

‘I’m sure the Sydney FC fans will make their feelings towards him well known each time he touches the ball.’

A near-capacity crowd will converge on Allianz Stadium, with general admission sitting already sold out.
