Swati Semwal: I was fortunate to debut alongside Rajkummar Rao; I loved his dedication and energy as an actor – Times of India

After making her big Bollywood debut with ‘Bareilly Ki Barfi!’, Swati Semwal has been all over the place adding feathers to her cap while trying her hands in acting and filmmaking. In a freewheeling interview with ETimes, the actress opened up about being a fan of Shah Rukh Khan, idolising Irrfan Khan and working with some amazing co-stars like Rajkummar Rao and Zeeshan Ayyub. Excerpts…

Hailing from a non-film background, what wooed you to this profession?
I am a Human Emotions and Psychology Enthusiast. I like digging deep into human brains and that is my reason to fall in love with acting. I got goosebumps seeing Shah Rukh Khan on screen every time as a kid. I wondered how he could tell me so much just with his eyes.

Acting, writing, directing – which is closest to your heart and why?
Acting is my calling and it is closest to my heart as it gives me a chance to live various lives in one. My friends call me chameleon to tease me. Little do they know that I take it as a compliment!

You have chosen pretty unconventional topics for your short movies. How did you come up with it and what motivated you to share it with the world?
I have a lot to emote as an artist thus I created my own stories to understand acting and the whole process of filmmaking and films a bit more deeply. For me, it was all to be better at my craft and understand it in every way.

Is there any actor or director you look up to in the industry?
I have some deep connection with Irrfan Khan. It affected me immensely when he passed away. I have always looked up to him as an artist.

From the actors you have worked with so far, who has been an absolute delight to work with?
I was fortunate enough to debut alongside Rajkummar Rao and I have worked with him twice ever since. I loved his dedication and energy as an actor. Currently, I finished a series with Zeeshan Ayyub and I think he is the funniest human being I’ve known and also very talented.

There have been many instances in the past when a film or a series gets boycotted for various reasons. While a segment of the audience has become more accepting, others have become quite intolerant. Your thoughts…
I think the change has been sudden in Indian content and people are getting used to a lot of things and stories that they weren’t used to seeing before. I feel we should give our audience a bit more time to understand that art can be of all kinds without anyone getting offended. I have faith that like the industry, the audience will evolve too.

There has been an increase in women-centric content, especially on OTT. What do you feel about this as an actor and as a filmmaker?
I feel there are better roles written for women today as compared to the past. Earlier the female characters were a bit from a fantasy space and now it’s realistic so as an actor I seek different characters of all kinds. I thrive when there is a scope to perform. I am fortunate to play characters like Rama (Bareilly Ki Barfi! ) and Radha (‘Akkad Bakkad’) as they are so different from each other.
