Suzume director Makoto Shinkai hails SS Rajamouli’s Oscar-winner film RRR, calls it ‘new flavour’

Anime film buffs in India, and there are quite a few now, were in for a surprise when director Makoto Shinkai came visiting Mumbai on April 19, 2023. Shinkai’s newest film Suzume aka Suzume no Tojimari released in India on Friday, April 21, 2023. The director, who visited India for the second time, spoke to the media in Mumbai. He expressed his thoughts about India’s Academy Award-winning movie RRR, among other things.

Makoto Shinkai amazed the media and fans present at the press conference in Mumbai, when he said that he got to “learn a lot from Indian (film) directors”.

Here’s what Suzume director Makoto Shinkai said about the SS Rajamouli film RRR

Shinkai said that he had watched two of SS Rajamouli’s best films, RRR (2022) and Baahubali (2015 and 2017). He went on to say that he wants to make a movie like RRR in Japan, where viewers will clap, dance and cheer along! He wants to ensure that with his RRR-like film, “Japanese viewers become Indian viewers.”

The Suzume director called RRR a “new flavour” and that it was a notch better than a Hollywood film because of its emotions. “Hollywood doesn’t give what RRR can give,” he said.

About Suzume no Tojimari

Although Suzume released in India in theatres on April 21, 2023 through PVR Cinemas, the film was released in Japan in November 2022. Suzume went on to grab the spot of the fourth highest-grossing movie ever in Japan at the box office!

Suzume has opened in India to rave reviews. With that, Makoto Shinkai has a new fan-following apart from those anime fans who still talk about his earlier films like Your Name and Weathering With You.
