Suryakumar Yadav secures World Cup spot, backed by Rahul Dravid despite ODI concerns

We’ve chosen our World Cup squad, Suryakumar Yadav is a part of It,” says Rahul Dravid, supporting the stylish batsman

India’s head coach Rahul Dravid has reaffirmed his support for Suryakumar Yadav and confirmed his place in India’s final World Cup squad. While Suryakumar’s recent ODI form has raised concerns for the Indian team, Dravid believes in his potential. In 27 ODIs, Suryakumar has scored 537 runs at an average of 24.41, but he has the opportunity to make a statement in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia before the World Cup.

Dravid stated that Suryakumar will play in the first two games against Australia, as key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya have been rested and will return for the third ODI. Dravid expressed confidence in Suryakumar’s abilities and assured that he has the full backing of the team.

“We have picked our team for the World Cup, and Surya is in it. We have complete faith in him. He will definitely feature in the first two games,” said Rahul Dravid during the pre-match press conference for the first ODI. Suryakumar faces competition for a spot in India’s middle order, with Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer currently ahead in the race.

Notably, Suryakumar has struggled against Australia, recording three ducks in as many matches earlier this year in March. Dravid also explained the decision to rest Kohli and Rohit for the first two ODIs against Australia, saying, “We want Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be in the best physical and mental shape they can be in before the first World Cup game.”

Regarding flexibility in the batting order, Dravid hinted at the possibility of Ishan Kishan opening in the first two ODIs. “While we prefer to play our batters in their usual positions for the World Cup, Ishan Kishan provides us with flexibility. He can open at the top or bat in the middle order,” added Dravid on the potential role of Kishan in the opening matches of the series.
