Success is a habit, so is failure: Shiv Khera on success, motivation, and achieving more – Times of India

Motivational speaker, author, educator, and business consultant- Shiv Khera- enthralled the audience by delivering an inspiring talk at the seventh edition of the Times Litfest recently.
The author of the bestselling self-help book ‘You Can Win’ addressed a packed auditorium and shared his insights on success, motivation, winning and achieving more.

“Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently,” Khera quoted from his bestseller.
Emphasizing further on what they do differently, Khera said, “Winners form the habit of doing things, losers don’t like to do. These are the same things winners don’t like to do either but they do it anyway.”

“If you want to stand out you need to do something outstanding,” Khera quoted from his other self-help book titled ‘You Can Achieve More’.

Talking about success mantra and extraordinary success, Khera said, “’I want to have extraordinary success’ is the wrong question to ask, you need to ask, ‘Are you an extraordinary person with extraordinary commitments in life? Are you willing to work extraordinarily hard in life?’ First we must be something to get something”.

“A person with a positive attitude cannot be stopped and a person with a negative attitude cannot be helped,” said Khera talking about how our attitudes decide our success and failure in life.

Khera also shared his rags-to-riches story of him washing cars in Canada and later selling life insurance where he made zero sales. He also talked about how he tried his hands on three businesses with no money and failed in all three.

“Self confidence and confidence without humility amounts to arrogance,” said Khera.

Talking about problems and difficulties in life, the author said, “Problem is a sign of life, as long as we are alive we shall have problems. The day we don’t have problems we’ll be dead. We can’t solve all our problems but we can handle them.”

He also said that life is full of choices and compromises, which seems like a contradiction but not really. Many times in life people keep fighting the things they cannot change and they bring stress into their lives; they become unproductive and paralyzed. “

Answering the question if successful people also make mistakes, Khera said, “Making a mistake once in a while doesn’t bring failure. Repeating the same mistake again and again is what brings failure. Doing something positive once in a while doesn’t bring success; repeating the same positive behavior again and again is what brings success.”

Khera also laid down his definitions of success and failure. “Series of positive decisions in life is called success and a series of negative decisions in life is called failure. To some people success is a habit and to some people failure is a habit,” he said.

Shiv Khera concluded his talk by emphasising on the importance of good habits for a successful and good life. He said, “We are all creatures of habit. Form good habits and habits form characters. Our success and failure in life will depend on the quality of habits we have.”
