Strathclyde students can continue the party at their new union after licensing chiefs granted permission to sell alcohol.
The much-loved Strathy Union on John Street — which operated for over 60 years — has closed, but a new venue is set to open on Richmond Street next month.
And Glasgow’s Licensing Board has now granted a premises licence to the University of Strathclyde students association.
The new venue will be based in the £60m teaching and learning hub, and around £7m has been invested in student union facilities.
Archie MacIver, representing the union, said: “The Strathclyde student’s union, for the last 60 years or so, has operated from their premises in John Street, just up from the city chambers.
“Over the past two or three years or so, there’s been a lot of building and refurbishment of various properties within the Strathclyde University campus.
“This new building, it’ll be shared by all faculties, it will include lecture facilities, it will include student services, office space and so on, but also the student’s union.
“In essence, the way the student’s union operates in John Street will continue but from this location.”
There will be around 130 staff working in the union, which has a slightly lower capacity than the old home.
Mr MacIver added: “Access to the union will be restricted to students at the university and other education establishments with which they have a reciprocal arrangement as has always been the case.”
The 10-floor union on John Street hosted partying students for decades as well as sets from top musicians, including the Pogues, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac and Blondie.
When the union announced the closure last week, there was an outpouring of memories on social media.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: “I’m a University of Glasgow grad but in years gone by I spent many an evening doing politics and socialising in John Street. End of an era indeed.”
The union said: “We’d have liked to have thrown one last party for everyone but alas it was not to be, however we are looking forward to making new memories in Richmond Street.”
