Steve Smith has come clean about his bizarre ‘chainsaw’ celebration after notching up his 30th Test century on Thursday.
The 33-year-old admitted it was a playful joke at Marnus Labuschagne’s expense which had the Aussie dressing room in stitches.
‘I think it was this morning, Marn was complaining about getting ‘chainsawed’,’ Smith revealed at the end of a rain interrupted day two in Sydney.
‘Anrich’s ball that got him out kicked up a bit, and chainsawed. ‘I said to him, ‘I thought you were out caught on about 70 anyway, so you’ll be right.’
‘He goes, ‘Stop being so negative, Steve. I hope you get chainsawed today.’

Smith admitted it was a playful joke at Marnus Labuschagne’s expense which had the Aussie dressing room in stitches at the SCG
‘So I said, ‘Alright, when I get 100 I’ll reference the chainsaw.’ So that was essentially it.’
Labuschagne was dismissed on 79 by South African quick Anrich Nortje on day one of the third Test at the SCG following a nasty delivery which he edged to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne.
Smith and Labuschagne, both prolific run scorers for Australia – are close – with their passion for batting unrelenting.
Smith’s personal milestone was significant – it was his 30th Test century, which took him past Sir Donald Bradman’s 29 tons.
He now sits equal with Matt Hayden and only trails Ricky Ponting (41) and Steve Waugh (32) with the most Test hundreds for Australia.
Smith also had journalists scrambling for their laptops after declaring this could be his final Australian summer at Test level.

On Friday Smith retracted his bombshell comments, stating he is ‘always very cryptic with that stuff’ before adding he is ‘not going anywhere’ and is ‘comfortable where everything is at.’
Usman Khawaja remains unbeaten on 195, with no play on day three as late as 3pm local time due to rain.
The contest appears destined to be heading towards a draw thanks to the inclement weather.
Australia lead the three Test series 2-0.
