Last season, the Staud woman was partying hard at a coastal Italian disco. Sarah Staudinger staged a buzzy spring runway show in September centered around a giant, reflective lemon and featuring a star-studded cast of It girls like Irina Shayk and Paloma Elsesser. But now it’s time for rest. “Our spring 2022 girl has left the disco and made her way up the coast and landed herself in St. Tropez,” Staudinger said. “The summer [pre-fall] collection was inspired by the classic, nostalgic feeling of St. Tropez. There was no shortage of inspiration for this collection.”
Along with photos of her father vacationing in the coastal town, shots of celebrities visiting in the ’60s ’70s, and early ’80s, and the colors of the marina, Staudinger was inspired by the French-American feminist sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle and her colorful artwork. “I love her and St. Tropez for this moment because there’s a real balance between the exuberance and the effortlessness,” Staudinger said. Anyone familiar with de Saint Phalle’s work will be able to spot the reference right away. The first look, a mixed-texture crochet set, mimics the color palette of some of de Saint Phalle’s most famous pieces (the cutouts also echo her eclecticism, and are a big part of Staud’s brand DNA).
Everything—bags, clothing, and shoes—is meant to go seamlessly from day to night. “I really feel like you can wear anything at any point of the day and get away with it in St. Tropez,” Staudinger says. Interesting details elevate the most casual pieces to make them nightlife-worthy, while casual (and packable) fabrics bring the fanciest outfits down to the realities of travel. Consider a standout black, floor-length jersey dress, accented with round hammered metal medallions, a breton-striped polo dress in an open-weave knit, or even a fuchsia tiered maxi dress (or is it a gown? The line is so thin).
Accessories are always a key part of any Staud collection. Staudinger brought whimsy with gladiator sandals that resemble fashion-ified Tevas, a beaded top-handle bag in a lobster design, and a large rounded tote with rainbow stripes of leather, no doubt de Saint Phalle’s influence again. The collection ends with a three-piece suit for St. Tropez loungers: a knit mustard stripe bra-top, tap pants, and cardigan. The It girl’s outfit for heading to the beach, dinner, or a party.
