Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi, Eternals eyeing Oscar glory; Marvel pushing for first Best Picture win – Times of India

Could the Oscars 2022 see a superhero movie take home the Best Picture win? Well, Marvel seems to think so.

After earning its first Best Picture nomination for 2018’s ‘Black Panther’ and ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, Marvel Studios, is reportedly pushing for Oscar glory. According to the latest reports, the studio house that has been in a league of its own with all its releases earning big at the box office in 2021, is campaigning for its films ‘Black Widow’ (July 9, 2021), ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ (September 3, 2021), ‘Eternals’ (November 5, 2021), and the record-breaking ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (December 17, 2021) for the Academy Awards.

According to Comic Book, Disney and Marvel Studios are building an Academy Awards campaign in support of Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, leaving Marvel to be competing heavily with itself.

Most significantly, Marvel’s campaign is pushing hard in the Best Picture category, especially for the Chloe Zhao directed, ‘Eternals’. The director who won the Best Director and Best Picture Oscar for ‘Nomadland’ (2020), has big hopes riding on her shoulders to strike gold again this year. Besides being pushed for the top two categories, all of the ensemble cast has been entered in the acting categories. The movie is also being entered for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score, states a report on Comicbook.com.

The studio is also backing ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ for all 14 Oscar categories, including Simu Liu for Best Actor and Awkwafina for Best Supporting Actress.

A “For Your Consideration” campaign has also been launched for the Scarlett Johansson starrer ‘Black Widow’, despite the infamous lawsuit. It is actively pushing Johansson for a Best Actress nomination at this year’s Academy Awards.

Tom Holland’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has also been submitted in all top categories, considering that it single-handedly revived the global box office and was widely supported by fans and critics alike. The film is tipped to earn an Academy Award for the Best Picture.

Despite the box office numbers Marvel superhero films, including ‘Avengers: Endgame’ have mostly scored only in the technical categories including Visual Effects and Sound. While ‘Black Panther’ and the animated ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ earned Best Picture nominations, both unfortunately lost.

Could Eternals, ‘Shang-Chi’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ or ‘Eternals’ be Marvel’s ticket to win the studio its first Best Picture Academy Award?
