Curtains have come down on the Special Olympics World Games 2023 with a grand closing ceremony in Berlin, Germany. India’s overall medals tally has reached 191 so far, with some events still underway. Roller skating has proved to be a major contributor to India’s tally, grabbing a maximum of 27 medals for the country. The final medals tally will come out later tonight. Talking exclusively to Akashvani News this evening, Chairperson of Special Olympics, Bharat, Dr Mallika Nadda said, the second largest Indian contingent of 198 athletes with 57 coaches competed in 16 sports in the nine-day sporting bonanza.
Yesterday, on its penultimate day, the Indian contingent secured 157 medals comprising 66 gold, 50 silver and 41 bronze. Arayan in the 300 meters and Deepen in the 1000 meters were the gold medal-winning roller skaters. The Indian men mixed 5×5 basketball team beat Portugal 6-3 to claim gold. In the women’s unified team event, India won gold, beating UAE. The women’s 5×5 team settled for a silver after losing to Sweden in the final. In Tennis, Swaraaj Singh lost to Tamas Torok to win silver in the men’s singles Level 5 event. In Volleyball, India beat Korea 2-0 in the men’s and mixed, bronze medal match. India also won a silver in women’s handball after losing to Azerbaijan in the final.
The Special Olympics World Games is an event held to promote the recognition and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.
