Spain have been dealt a huge blow on the eve of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament after star player Alexia Putellas has been ruled out of the tournament.
Putellas, who was also named the FIFA Best Women’s Player earlier this year, was at the heart of the Barcelona women’s team which won the Spanish league and finished runners-up in the Champions League.
She was the top scorer in the Champions League with 11 goals while she also finished with 18 strikes in the league.

The Spanish Football Federation said: ‘The tests carried out on the Spanish international on the afternoon of this Tuesday, July 5, 2022, at King Edward VII’s hospital in London, have confirmed that the captain of the Spanish Women’s National Team suffers a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.’
The 28-year-old will be a huge absence for Spain at the tournament, which starts with the opening game between hosts England and Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Putellas is the second Spain player to get injured ahead of the Euros. Forward Jennifer Hermoso has been ruled out of the competition after she was diagnosed with a grade two sprain of the lateral ligament in her right knee.

Spain are one of the favourites to lift the trophy on July 31 and begin their campaign against Finland in Milton Keynes on Friday.
Their second game will be against Germany at the Brentford Community Stadium in London on July 12 before they play Denmark – who will be making their return to international competition after failing to qualify for the 2019 World Cup – in their final group clash on July 16.
Spain are touted as the favourites to win the tournament despite failing to progress beyond the quarter-finals in either 2013 or 2017.
