Son Heung-min rues Tottenham loss after Antonio Conte’s side lose to Leicester

‘Today should be a big lesson for us’: Son Heung-min says Tottenham must learn from their humiliating 4-1 defeat by Leicester as he labels their abject performance ‘very sad and disappointing’

Tottenham forward Son Heung-min branded his side’s 4-1 hammering by Leicester ‘very sad’.

Antonio Conte’s side were looking to build on a good run of results at the King Power Stadium but were embarrassed by the Foxes after leading 1-0.

They took the lead through Ridrigo Bentancur but Nampalys Mendy, James Maddison, Kelechi Iheanacho and Harvey Barnes all struck to give Brendan Rodgers’ side a much-needed victory.

The defeat is a blow to Tottenham’s top four hopes, and came as a shock to several Spurs supporters.

After the match, Son insisted his side started well, but claimed the result showed the quality of the Premier League as a division.

‘We started quite well and created chances’, he said. ‘After it was 1-1 we conceded a quick second goal and then it was open. It was a difficult game then.

‘Leicester were so clinical, they almost scored every chance. It’s a very disappointing result.

‘I think it’s very sad. We knew it was going to be a really hard game. In the Premier League it’s never an easy game. It showed the Premier League has a high level. I don’t know what I can say, it’s very disappointing.

‘I don’t think [it was complacency]. We came with a good feeling after beating City. The first minute we were really on it. We should be ready and learn something.

‘Today should be a big lesson for us.’

Spurs had the chance to at least temporarily leapfrog Newcastle into fourth with a win but they were second best throughout.

Tottenham had been below-par with captain Harry Kane quiet despite his good historic record against Leicester and £40million wing-back Pedro Porro having a difficult debut against Harvey Barnes.

To Conte’s credit, he stayed out in his box to show solidarity with his team despite his recent physical ailment. But there were definitely fewer histrionics from the coach than we are used to seeing.

For Spurs, there needs to be a massive improvement if they’re not to be embarrassed against AC Milan when the Champions League resumes at the knockout stage on Tuesday.
