Snowdrop controversy: JTBC sues netizens for accusing Jisoo and Jung Hae In starrer of ‘historical distortion’ – Times of India

BLACKPINK member Jisoo and Jung Hae In starrer ‘Snowdrop’ got swept in controversies when netizens slammed the drama for ‘historical distortion’. While JTBC who helmed the drama, came forward to clarify the accusation with an apology to the viewers, the online trolls and malicious attacks reportedly continued despite all efforts. On Friday, JTBC confirmed that it had filed criminal lawsuits against social media users who continued to accuse ‘Snowdrop’ of historical distortion.

In an official statement to the media, JTBC shared today, “JTBC has moved forward with criminal lawsuits against netizens who habitually spread false rumours about ‘Snowdrop’ with malicious intent. Due to the spread of such rumours and accusations, the cast members of ‘Snowdrop’ suffered from severe malicious attacks online, and the production company and several sponsoring companies all faced damages. JTBC has concluded that such damages cannot be suffered each time a drama falls under controversy. Thus, the broadcasting station has chosen to act in order to remind viewers of the gravity of such actions.”

It all began in December 2021 when the show premiered and sparked debates on online platforms regarding alleged historical distortion. While some accused that the drama used the name of a real-life historical figure without consent, others simple slammed the makers for ‘mocking’ the democratic movement of South Korea. It was further alleged that the characters in the show were romanticized against the history of South Korea’s Agency for National Security Planning from the period reportedly.

While the matter was taken to several broadcasting communities and even civil courts seeking a ban on the show, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KOCSC), ruled, “It is difficult to conclude that the drama ‘Snowdrop’ romanticizes the Agency for National Security Planning or mocks the national democratic movement.”

Currently, ‘Snowdrop’ is streaming on Netflix.
