SMU HC Tim Jankovich announces retirement

SMU head coach Tim Jankovich announced his retirement after spending the last six seasons at the helm for the Mustangs. Jankovich initially joined the program as associate head coach in 2012 and then became the full-time head coach in 2016.

Basketball analyst Jeff Goodman reported late Tuesday morning that there is a front-runner to succeed Jankovich, but there is no deal on the table yet.

Jankovich began his head coaching career at North Texas ahead of the 1993-1994 campaign and stayed with the Mean Green for four seasons, compiling a 53-57 record. His next lead gig was for five seasons at Illinois State from 2007 to 2012, a stretch in which he led the team to a four winning seasons and a 104-64 mark.

Jankovich went 9-0 in his first stretch with SMU as an interim head coach in 2015-2016 while basketball legend Larry Brown was suspended. Jankovich took over as the official head coach in 2016-2017, a season in which the team was ranked as good as 11th in the nation, posted a 30-5 record, won both the regular-season and conference tournament title, and made the NCAA Tournament.

In seven years with SMU, Jankovich registered a 125-64 record. He holds a career coaching record of 282-185.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to have coached at SMU for the past ten years,” the coach said, per SMU. “I am grateful to Dr. Turner and Rick Hart for their support and leadership. I am also grateful to all the outstanding players, coaches, managers and support staff I have had the opportunity to work with along the way.”
