SINGAPORE: Badminton world champion Loh Kean Yew crashed out of the Commonwealth Games men’s singles event on Saturday (Aug 6) after losing to Malaysia’s Ng Tze Yong in the quarter-finals.
Things started well for the world number 9, but his Malaysian opponent, ranked 42, came from behind to seal the victory 21-15, 14-21, 11-21.
Loh’s compatriot Jason Teh, meanwhile, advanced to the men’s singles semi-finals, after beating Jamaica’s Samuel Ricketts 22-20, 21-10 in his quarter-finals on Saturday.
Teh will face either India’s Lakshya Sen or Mauritius’ Julien Georges Paul.
In the women’s singles, world number 19 Yeo Jia Min dispatched Australia’s Wendy Chen 21-15, 21-15. Fourth seed Yeo will next face India’s top seed PV Sindhu in the semis.
The mixed doubles pair of Jessica Tan and Terry Hee also cruised past New Zealand’s Anona Pak and Oliver Leydon Davis. The Singaporeans won 21-11, 21-11.
Tan and Hee will go up against Malaysia’s Tan Kian Meng and Lai Pei Jing for a place in the finals.
Earlier in the Games, Singapore’s badminton team took home the bronze medal in the mixed team event after beating England 3-0.
