Bridgerton star Simone Ashley’s favorite Met Gala looks are by Zendaya. Her Cinderella-esque Tommy Hilfiger dress, that Joan of Arc Versace moment… So, when Simone got her first invite to fashion’s famous fundraiser, she had fantasy style on the brain. The man to make her own Met fairytale a reality? Jeremy Scott.
It turns out Simone and Jeremy are a match made in heaven. Scott, the godfather of camp, played on the Bridgerton actor’s period drama background to create a look that was one part regal, two parts rambunctious. “I’m so thrilled to have the girl of the moment, the true diamond of the season with me on my arm,” says Scott, who fell for Ashley as soon as he clapped eyes on her as Kate Sharma in the second instalment of the bodice-ripping Netflix show.
“I’ve often thought about her first scene in Bridgerton, and the mystery of who the woman with the big hooded cape galloping through the woods is,” shares the designer, who has been at the creative helm of Moschino since 2013. He translated this air of mystique into a dramatic black satin opera coat. “As she unbuttons it, you see this gold embroidered bustier top and a black high-waisted bias-cut skirt,” continues Scott. “It’s completely Simone: it’s chic, it’s regal, and it’s got this kind of silhouette that you don’t find on the red carpet that often.”

For Ashley’s part, she’s in awe of the showmanship that goes into Scott’s work. “I’ve learned so much along the way,” says the 27-year-old, whose fashion career thus far has focused on block color and crop tops, thanks to the trend-conscious eye of her stylist, Rebecca Corbin-Murray. “It truly is such an honor to collaborate on ideas, and to wear a piece designed by such an artist as Jeremy.”
The gilded glamour theme was a natural fit for a man who lives and breathes fabulousness. Indeed, Scott’s last Moschino collection—one of his best yet—was, he says, based directly on “this idea of old money; the mansions and the things that you would find in them, the accoutrements, the flourishes…” An LBD spelling out “Gilt Without Guilt” was almost a direct tongue-in-cheek reference to this year’s Met Gala dress code. “I felt like I was right on time and in tune with the theme,” smiles Jeremy, who is only ever in competition with himself when it comes to the annual convention for the world’s best-dressed. Not because he’s arrogant, rather because, “No one else does what I do.”
The Kansas City-born wunderkind, who famously imagined Katy Perry as a chandelier and, later, a burger for 2019’s camp-themed gala, is certainly the host with the most for Ashley’s first ball experience. “My lips are sealed,” is all he’ll say when asked about what goes down on the Moschino table. (Previous memorable guests include Cardi B, Madonna and Gwen Stefani). “It’s only for those invited [to know]…”
